Intervene early

Supporting and accommodating employees at the early stages of a mental health issue helps lessen recovery time and reduces their time away from work.

Counselling service

LGIS recommends members utilise an EAP service to address employees' personal and work-related concerns. LGIS counsellors provide support specifically with workplace issues within local government, an area which our counsellors are experienced and trained in.

Counselling is an integral part of our Psychological Safe program, serving as a vital resource whenever employees struggle with workplace-related issues such as: job-related stress, burnout, conflict with colleagues, leadership or management issues, and performance anxiety.

Mediation

Mediation is a powerful preventative tool for all LGIS members. Using this service early can avoid potentially toxic workplace relationships that may lead to psychological injury.

Mediation is an intervention aimed at resolving a conflict situation between two parties. It isn't necessary for the outcome to be any kind of friendship; it can be an effort to establish a professional environment where all parties are comfortable.

Self-harm prevention resources

For most people, work often represents more than just a place of employment. People use work to socialise, debrief, build connections and maintain a sense of purpose. It is common for people to spend more time at work with their colleagues than with their own families and friends. For these reasons amongst others, employees may express suicidal ideation in the workplace. Employees may make self-harming comments at work and/or colleagues may notice concerning changes in mood/behaviour that could serve as warning signs.

In such circumstances such as suicidal ideation or intent, please reach out to the People risk team - emma.horsefield@lgiswa.com.au
