About the workshops

The COVID-19 crisis is proving a dramatic test of management and leadership. In these extraordinarily stressful time, the value of great management and leadership is demonstrated every day. To lead teams during and through these uncertain, stressful times managers need to increase their 'soft skill' capability. Skills such as communication, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, flexibility, negotiation, decisiveness and creativity, are needed to manage teams through an ever-changing work environment.

The unique combination of personal attributes and behaviours required to engage and motivate employees is not something many of us are born with – it requires an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. It requires the ability to sometimes have difficult conversations and address poor performance – something that many people struggle with. However, setting expectations builds trust, builds engagement and ultimately builds a high performing culture.

Whilst being a leader in this climate is an unenviable task, the good news is that it can be a wonderful opportunity to shine. Long after the COVID-19 pandemic is over, employees will speak of how their leader made them feel in what could possibly be the greatest time of uncertainty in their working life.

LGIS, through its risk consulting provider Marsh Risk Consulting has designed this program to support local government leaders to build their capability to support, encourage and develop their teams, and build a high performing culture in the new normal. Our local government risk specialists will facilitate three, 2.5 hour, workshops covering key aspects to support leadership success in the new normal.

Module 1

Leadership during constant change

With new ways of working, including a dramatic increase in employees working remotely (a change that is likely to continue after the pandemic), leaders need to adjust their managerial style and ensure workplace systems, support and team structures facilitate flexible work arrangements. Now, more than ever before, it is important for leaders to have strong and effective communication skills.

This module will cover;

  • Understanding your OSH responsibilities
  • Being aware of new and emerging risks (physical and psychosocial)
  • Communicating new expectations
  • Managing performance without line of sight
  • Practicing self-care as a leader / manager

Module 2

Supporting staff to thrive through good work-design

"Work design concerns the content and organisation of one's work tasks, activities, relationships, and responsibilities" (Sharon Parker, 2014).

Decisions about work design affect outcomes at multiple levels including whether employees feel engaged or stressed at work, and whether the organisation achieves its targets. Often work design is described in terms of "job characteristics", or features of work that affect how people feel about their jobs. Research has identified many job characteristics that are positive, that result in work being more motivating or less stressful.

This module will cover;

  • A leader's role supporting staff and creating a healthy workplace culture
  • An understanding of the benefits of good work design
  • An introduction to the SMART work design model
  • How to re-design work

Module 3

Leading and supporting others through effective conflict management

Times of stress, uncertainty, and crisis can lead to interpersonal conflict and cultural disruption. The ability to effectively manage relationships at all levels is critical. Leaders who can demonstrate strong relationship management skills will ultimately be more successful. By preventing and resolving disputes you can help employees address problems early and avoid major disruptions to the organisation.

This module will cover;

  • What causes conflict?
  • Recognising early signs of conflict
  • Preventing destructive conflict (SCARF model)
  • Managing conflict and difficult conversations
  • Finding win / win outcomes
