While many are focused on the physical health impact of COVID-19, the psychological, social and emotional consequences are likely to be far greater and last far longer.

The challenges associated with social distancing and isolation, including separation from loved ones, loss of freedom and reduced income, are leading some people to experience feelings of anxiety, boredom, frustration and fear.

It is important for organisations and leaders to consider how you will maintain a mentally healthy workplace and workforce right now.

Some strategies include:

  1. Sharing relevant information in a timely manner, and letting the workforce know how your local government is addressing new requirements.
  2. Having regular quality contact with remote workers to stay in touch and monitor their health, safety and wellbeing.
  3. Look out for any signs and symptoms of distress in workers or any change in character (e.g. tone of voice, type of language used and body language).
  4. Provide staff with information on support services that are available including, your Employee Assistance Program, and other health agencies such as Lifeline (link) and Beyond Blue (link)
