Is your playground a safe haven or a hazard? Back

A recent claim has brought the management and maintenance of playgrounds into sharp focus for the sector. To mitigate incidents and strengthen claims defence, members are reminded to have robust playground management processes in place.

Ensuring playground safety whilst furthering community inclusion is vital for local governments to create a positive environment for children. Playgrounds, while essential for physical activity and social interaction, also present various hazards. As such, members are often faced with the challenge of managing liability concerns associated with playgrounds.

When accidents occur, as it recently has, members may face liability claims for injuries or property damage. These claims can arise from poorly maintained equipment, failure to address safety hazards, design errors, lack of proper signage, or inadequate supervision. Claims can range from minor cuts and scratches to more serious injuries such as broken bones or head trauma. To address these risks, regular inspections, and maintenance are crucial. Members must:

  • identify potential hazards;
  • assess the likelihood and severity of accidents:
  • implement appropriate risk management strategies to mitigate these risks.

Meeting the minimum Australian standards, regular inspections, prioritising actions, and maintaining thorough record keeping significantly minimises the risk of accidents and demonstrates a strong commitment to safety.

In the unfortunate event of an accident or injury, we have a dedicated claims team that work closely with you to investigate incidents, assess liability, and handle claims efficiently. We'll help you navigate the complex legal processes and minimise the financial and reputational impact of claims.

Ensure regular inspections and safeguards are implemented in your community. Find valuable LGIS resources on risks and effective playground management, plus case studies in our Risk Matters Spring 2022 Edition.
