LGIS assisted the City of Kwinana to coordinate their Safety and Wellbeing Expo on 12 October 2022. The event was organised for the local government's staff to celebrate #OSHtober.
The City engaged a few of the LGIS preferred health and wellbeing providers, and the LGIS injury prevention team was also part of it. Our injury prevention team provided an ergonomics and injury prevention awareness stall with a grip-strength challenge. The expo was well received and was a great way for the City to engage their workforce in work, health, safety and wellbeing.
LGIS displayed a health promotional stall. It provided the following services during the Expo:
Ergonomics awareness
Our consultants provided basic resources and advice relating to ergonomics. These included basic workstation set up guidelines (sitting and standing), and specific stretching programs for reducing the risk of musculoskeletal (MSD) injuries caused by hazardous manual tasks (HMTs).
Physical capacity awareness
This activity helped staff check their physical ability using grip strength dynamometer. This was a great interactive activity to engage City of Kwinana staff and bring their focus towards physical capacity and fatigue when performing manual tasks. The activity demonstrates the decrease in strength over repeated attempts of maximum gripping, and relates to an increase in risk of musculoskeletal injuries when performing repetitive manual tasks, particularly when working close to your maximum physical capacity.
Other health and wellbeing providers were also present including St John WA. They were there to test people's CPR skills.
The aim of the expo was to bring the City staff together and encourage them to engage in some fun activities. Events like these assist in creating a positive environment at a workplace and help in promoting physical and mental health and wellbeing. Another objective was to bring employees from different areas under one roof so they can socialise and get to know each other. It promotes teamwork and overall productivity.
