A fond farewell to Peter Forbes Back
Print

After nearly a decade of dedicated service, Peter Forbes stepped down in December as Chair of the LGIS Board, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, resilience, and unwavering commitment to WA's local government sector. At the same time, we are delighted to welcome Sarah Van Gent as the newest Independent Director, bringing fresh expertise and energy to the Board.

Peter Forbes joined the LGIS Board in December 2015, recognised for his expertise in leadership and corporate governance. With a career that includes founding his own successful accounting firm, serving as Managing Partner at HLB Mann Judd, and leading MDA National as CEO, Peter brought a wealth of experience to LGIS.

He became an integral part of our organisation, joining the Finance and Audit Committee and becoming its Chair within a year. In 2020, he was appointed Board Chair, succeeding Howard King, and was reappointed annually by his colleagues.

From the very start of his tenure, Peter put LGIS members first. Under his leadership the Board dealt with unprecedented challenges, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic where the Board approved a $7 million support package to ease member contributions during a time of significant financial pressure.

Throughout his chairmanship, LGIS flourished. Peter's collaborative leadership oversaw the return to 100% participation of local governments across WA, expanded coverage options to include motor vehicle, journey injury, employment practices liability, and strengthened LGIS's corporate governance framework.

Peter's leadership has ensured LGIS remains a sustainable, member-focused mutual scheme, delivering vital protection and risk management to WA's local governments. His legacy will benefit the sector for many years to come.

We're also pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Van Gent as a new Independent Director. Sarah is a highly accomplished finance professional and Board Director, with a diverse background that includes serving as Chairperson of Women's Legal Service WA as well as Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary at SensesWA. Her experience at EY, managing audits of mutual schemes and finance sector entities, further equips her with invaluable expertise to support and guide our sector.

As LGIS continues to serve WA's local governments, we thank Peter Forbes for his outstanding leadership and warmly welcome Sarah Van Gent to the Board, confident she will make a valuable contribution to LGIS.
