The Great West Aussie Adventure returns for 2026

The Great West Aussie Adventure (GWAA) is back in 2026—and this year’s event is set to be bigger, brighter and even more competitive.

GWAA2026 is the third edition of LGIS’ sector-wide physical activity and wellbeing challenge, designed to help local government teams build healthier habits, boost morale, and enjoy a bit of friendly competition along the way.

The aim is simple: increase movement across the sector as we “travel” together across a virtual map of Western Australia.

Here’s how it works: every local government will be automatically set up as a team, and all staff are encouraged to register and take part. Once you’re in, you can log virtually any type of activity in the online portal—whether it’s walking, cycling, gardening, gym sessions, sport, or something else that gets you moving. The system then converts your activity type, time and intensity into a distance score, which moves your team along the WA map.

You’ll be able to track your own progress, your team’s progress, and see how you stack up against other local governments across the state.

There’s plenty at stake. The overall winner is determined by the average distance covered per team member, which means every participant counts and smaller teams can still be strong contenders. (To compete, teams need at least two registered participants.) And while average distance decides the top prize, total distance delivers the ultimate bragging rights.

Last year, the challenge saw 700+ participants collectively cover more than 200,000 kilometres—an incredible effort across the sector.

So, who will take top prize in 2026? Register, get moving, and encourage colleagues to join—because the more people involved, the more fun (and momentum) your team will build.
