Poolside Prevention: Key Takeaways from Royal Life Saving WA

Our recent Aquatic webinar (Tuesday 5 May), delivered by LGIS and Royal Life Saving WA, provided a timely and practical refresher on the everyday actions that help keep aquatic facilities safe, compliant and ready to respond when conditions change.

Across the session, the presenters reinforced that effective aquatic risk management is not a single activity—it's a cycle that needs to be embedded into routine, operational decision-making and team culture.

The discussion aligned strongly to four core pillars of mitigation and risk management: Prevention (avoidance), Mitigation (reducing severity), Preparedness (plans and capability), and Response and Recovery (restoring quickly). Together, these pillars provide a clear picture for members to review current controls, identify gaps, and prioritise improvements that are achievable and measurable.

A strong theme was the value of consistency: consistent supervision expectations, consistent documentation, consistent maintenance and inspection routines, and consistent capability-building for staff.

The webinar also highlighted how quickly aquatic environments can shift—from operational pressures and asset issues to incident escalation—making it essential that teams understand both their responsibilities and the practical steps to take when something goes wrong.

The Royal Life Saving WA team shared evidence-informed guidance and field-based experience, translating best practice into actions that can be applied at poolside and at a governance level.

The Q&A further surfaced common challenges across facilities and underscored the value of clear planning, strong communication pathways, and confidence in escalation and response processes.

We encourage members to consider what small changes can be made now to strengthen prevention and preparedness before peak periods.
