WorkSafe project – high risk work in local government

WorkSafe and Specialists Directorate of the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation, and Safety are running a project which will run in the 2024/25 financial year, focusing on ensuring workplace safety at recreation centres, local government depots and operations centres. These areas have been identified as high risk due to the challenges associated with near drowning incidents, hazardous chemical exposure, workplace violence, and manual handling injuries.

By conducting random inspections across councils in metropolitan and regional areas, WorkSafe aims to raise awareness, promote compliance with work health and safety legislation, reduce the risk of exposure to hazardous tasks, and ensure effective incident management systems are in place to prevent further incidents from occurring.

The regulator has indicated that where local governments are found to be non-complaint, appropriate enforcement actions will be taken.
