The Great West Aussie Adventure – Encouraging physical activity across the sector

LGIS is launching a new sector-wide health initiative called the Great West Aussie Adventure as part of its health and wellbeing program. It starts on 17 July 2023 and will run for eight weeks.

Fitness for work is an ongoing challenge for many local governments as they manage an aging workforce with increasing chronic issues such as obesity, heart disease, and mental illness. This challenge is designed to be accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, encouraging behavioural change to improve overall wellbeing.

We've partnered with Health by Design to provide all our members and their staff access to this fun and interactive physical activity challenge. It's an excellent way to encourage your people to get active and have some friendly competition with other local governments.

So trek (virtually) along the Great West Aussie Adventure route with your work colleagues for this challenge. You can track your daily physical activity levels to help your team be the first across the finish line.

Whether you walk, cycle, swim or dance, any sort of exercise will count towards your team's progress along the adventure route.

Every week participants will be able to see their individual achievements, their team results and how they rank against other local government teams. LGIS will also have prizes for outstanding individuals at the end of the challenge.

Each local government will already have a team set up in the challenge and staff can join their own local government team and compete against the sector. This is funded by LGIS and does not affect your 2023/24 health and wellbeing allocation.

Our winning list would include:

  • Individual overall council winner – most total distance covered
  • Regional winners – Collate results from each region
  • Best region overall – most distance covered within each region
  • Top 20 individual participants with the most distance covered will receive an LGIS wellbeing pack

Registration details about the challenge have already been sent out to your health and wellbeing representative. For more information about this exciting health initiative, please get in touch with our WorkCare Services Manager, James Larkin on 0419 355 943 or email health@lgiswa.com.au
