Asbestos– are you managing the risk?

Due to the age of your buildings, it's likely that asbestos containing materials (ACM) are still present in your assets.

Whilst all ACM poses a risk, this risk increases when the material is disturbed or damaged.

Under workplace safety legislation, all local governments have an obligation to:

  • identify any ACM in your workplaces, and
  • develop and have available an asbestos register that records the location, type and condition of any asbestos that has been identified.

If asbestos is identified, you should have in place an asbestos management plan that details how you will manage the risks associated with ACM. You should ensure that workers who may come into contact with ACM have received sufficient training on the identification and management of asbestos in the workplace.

LGIS, through its risk consulting provider Marsh Advisory can assist members to manage the risks associated with ACM at your local government. Our specialist consultants can:

  • Conduct property inspections for asbestos containing material identification.
  • Complete risk assessments for all identified asbestos containing materials.
  • Develop an asbestos register.
  • Develop an asbestos management plan
  • Train workers in asbestos awareness and identification
  • Provide notification stickers to be affixed to asbestos containing material to alert workers, contractors and others of the potential hazard.
